Billions at stake in battle over sports on satellite radio

The new world of satellite radio is reshaping an ages-old medium and turning it into the hottest new vehicle for sports fans, no matter how far they roam or what time zone they’re in.

Across an ever-expanding universe, a white-hot competition between major players XM and Sirius is taking place for the hearts, minds, ears and wallets of sports consumers. The two satellite radio companies generated the most media buzz for the millions of dollars thrown at shock jocks such as Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony to attract their loyal legions from traditional radio. But it is sports fans and sports programming that are emerging as driving forces in this new media battle.

Last month, Sirius pirated NASCAR from XM by offering $107 million over five years for the auto-racing broadcasting rights beginning in 2007. On March 3, XM signed an undisclosed multiyear deal to broadcast Indy Racing League events, including this year’s Indianapolis 500.

DirecTV Group Inc., said two of its units will take out a new $2 billion secured credit line and will sell nearly $500 million in unsecured bonds to pay off the units’ $1.26 billion credit line and to repay an $875 million promissory note owed to the parent company. The units, DirecTV Holdings LLC and DirecTV Financing Co., also will redeem $490 million in principal amount of their 8.375 percent senior notes due in 2013, the El Segundo-based parent said in a release.

Investors sent TiVo (TIVO) shares soaring 75% to $6.70 Tuesday after the digital video recorder pioneer unveiled its first deal to provide its widely praised television-recording service to a major cable operator.

BMW’s Auto Launch Uses Sirius Satellite Radio

For the first time, a major automobile manufacturer is using satellite radio to promote a new vehicle launch. BMW of North America announced Wednesday an innovative promotion with Sirius to celebrate the launch of the new 3 Series vehicle.

The promotion, called “3 Across America” and running March 26-May 6, revolves around a 44-day cross-country tour featuring a caravan of 3 Series cars and culminates in an 18-hour broadcast on a special Sirius BMW channel. The program, described as part cultural diary, part entertainment, will provide a “travelogue” of the coast-to-coast tour from New York to Los Angeles, followed by a live concert starring top-name artists from the Peterson Automotive Museum in L.A.

Does anyone want TiVo?

Shares of TiVo have surged nearly 20 percent in the past month. But some analysts think investors need to hit the rewind button on the stock.

TiVo, the company that popularized digital video recording technology, has never reported a profit and analysts are forecasting a loss of 43 cents a share in its fiscal fourth quarter, despite an expected 56 percent gain in revenues.

What’s more, losses are widening. The company posted a loss of 12 cents a share a year ago. TiVo (Research) is scheduled to report its latest results on Thursday. […]

The one company that TiVo does have a partnership with, satellite TV provider DirecTV, which is majority-owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., announced late last year that it will soon start selling a box with a DVR developed by NDS Group, another News Corp-controlled firm.

The marketing agreement between DirecTV and TiVo lasts until February 2007 but investors have reason to be worried since TiVo has relied heavily on DirecTV to gain new subscribers. Nearly 60 percent of TiVo’s 3 million subscribers are DirecTV customers.

DirecTV Exec Steps Down

The president of DirecTV abruptly resigned Monday, a little more than a year after he was handpicked for the job by News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch in the wake of his takeover of the satellite TV leader.

DirecTV executives said no replacement would be named for Mitchell Stern, who had been commuting weekly between New York and the company’s El Segundo headquarters. Instead, sources said, the company would be run by DirecTV Group Inc. Chief Executive Chase Carey and two other News Corp. executives who have yet to be named.

But one of those is expected to be David Hill, chairman of Fox Sports Television Group, who has won wide praise for his creative instincts. He is credited with inventing such mainstays as the yellow first-down line in pro football games and the fixed scoreboard at the bottom of the TV screen. Hill will retain his position at Fox Sports, sources said.

XM Changes Program Structure, Faces New Indecency Standard Proposals

XM Satellite Radio made an announcement last week that it is expanding its basic service package, in an effort to counter the fact that their monthly subscription price for said service will increase from $9.99 to $12.99 beginning April 2. To make the price jump an easier transition for current subscribers, XM is also offering existing customers the opportunity to keep the $9.99 monthly rate provided they sign-up for a one-year prepaid plan. More substantial discounts can be obtained by purchasing a two, three, four, or five-year prepaid plan with the provider. The price change will not affect XM’s Family Plan, however, a package which permits XM subscribers to add up to four additional subscriptions for $6.99 a month per radio. […]

The news of XM’s programming alterations comes on the heels of a government push to permit FCC regulations on both cable television and satellite radio. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens said last week that he would “push for applying broadcast decency standards to cable television and subscription satellite TV and radio.” Previously, cable television and satellite radio providers were exempt from FCC regulations and indecency standards, as their services are only available to those who subscribe and regularly pay a monthly fee. Since the Janet Jackson Super Bowl debacle last year, however, the government is seeking to heighten the terms of their indecency standards.

Dish Network Launches TVG Interactive

After years of promises and disappointments, true two-way interactivity for horse-race wagering will reach 10 million TV sets nationwide this month through the Dish Network’s launch March 2 of the TVG Interactive Horseracing channel.

EchoStar Communications Corp.’s satellite service has begun rolling out the virtual channel to the 90% of its 11 million customers who can access its interactive services, a process that will take until the end of the month, the company said. It gives all of those subscribers the ability to access wagering and handicapping information for TVG’s tracks by pushing a button on a Dish Network remote control. Viewers do not need any additional hardware to access the service, which comes with Dish’s basic offering, its “Top 60” package that costs $31.99 a month.

DirecTV Files Lawsuit Against 19 Canadians

DirecTV, Inc. announced today that it has filed a lawsuit in Ontario against 19 Canadian citizens and five of their businesses that it believes were participating in a scheme to activate fraudulent DirecTV accounts that enabled individuals to receive DirecTV programming without authorization by, or proper payment to DirecTV.

In connection with the lawsuit, DirecTV executed civil seizure orders at nine separate locations in southern Ontario, and recovered a “significant volume” of computer files and business records related to the activation fraud scheme and grey market activity, as well as equipment used in the past to modify DirecTV access cards. The raid, the largest ever conducted by DirecTV on a single day, was the culmination of a six-month investigation by DirecTV’s Office of Signal Integrity and Legal department.

A top executive at DirecTV left the company as CEO Chase Carey consolidated his control of the satellite television broadcaster.
