Finisar accuses DirecTV of violating patents

Finisar Corp., a maker of gear for optical networks, Wednesday accused DirecTV Group Inc. of violating patents for an information-transmission system.

In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, located in Beaumont, Texas, Sunnyvale-based Finisar said it seeks monetary damages and injunctive relief.

It said DirecTV, the nation’s largest direct broadcast satellite provider, infringed patents for technology which provides access to the contents of a large database while using a “manageable amount of bandwidth.”

Sea Launch Plans Newest Satellite Launch

The DIRECTV Group has scheduled a late April launch for a satellite aboard a Sea Launch rocket.

Sea Launch, which launches satellites into orbit from a mobile sea-going platform near the equator, is headquartered in Long Beach.

The Boeing-built Spaceway F1 satellite is one of four that DIRECTV has scheduled for launch over the next three years in a major expansion of its programming capacity.

The expansion will enable DIRECTV to deliver more than 1,500 local and national high-definition channels and other advanced television programming services to consumers nationwide by 2007.

In February, Sea Launch successfully delivered XM Satellite Radio’s XM-3 satellite to orbit from its ocean-based platform on the Equator, in its first mission of the 2005 manifest. Early data indicate the spacecraft is in excellent condition.

DirecTV Shares Could Rise More Than 50 Pct – Barron’s

Shares of satellite television provider DirecTV Group Inc. could rise more than 50 percent within the next year, a Wall Street analyst told Barron’s newspaper.

DirecTV could prove to be a cheap investment in pay-television if it increases its cash flow at rates expected by analysts, the paper said, citing growth targets from Banc of America Securities analyst Douglas Shapiro.

Shapiro said he expects the stock to increase to $22 a share in 12 months from its Friday close of $14.51. Barron’s said Shapiro expects DirecTV to generate $300 million of free cash in 2005 and to increase cash flow at a compounded annual rate of 20 percent through 2010.

AOL, XM Satellite to start Web radio service

America Online Monday announced plans to launch a Web-based radio service with XM Satellite Radio in a move that may help XM win customers from AOL’s 24 million subscribers.

The service, which will offer about 200 channels streamed over the Web in CD-quality sound for a monthly fee, will combine existing stations from both partners and will begin to roll out this summer.

The service, which will cost an estimated $5 a month, will be available for free to AOL’s current paying subscribers. AOL is a unit of Time Warner Inc. , the world’s largest media company.

XM Radio subscribers will have access only to XM’s online stations, but some AOL programming will be available on XM’s stations.

Radio quality of either satellite radio service isn’t quite what either Sirius or XM Radio would have you believe in their marketing hype. It is not pure CD quality (although, technically, that may be what they’re streaming). (See this interesting thread on Sirius and XM sound quality.) I’m not the first to notice or comment about this quality issue.

The voiceovers, especially, I’ve noticed having a tinny sound to them, as though the announcer was in a little echo chamber.

If satellite radio wants to keep the customers its got and keep adding new ones, it has to do a better job at increasing its sound quality. While you won’t notice it in day-to-day listening (for the most part), you will notice it when you’re listening to the voiceovers.

Good service and bad from Dish Network

I have been using Dish Network for more than a year.

In my December bill, there was a pay-per-view charge of $10.99 which we did not use.

I called to inquire and my extra charge got eliminated from the bill. I was impressed with their customer service.

Later, when I tried using pay-per-view in February, I was told that I can no longer use it without paying a charge of $5 per view in addition to the regular charge.

Nobody advised me of that before. They were very rude, too.

XM, Sirius gaining traction

Car dealer Tom Barenboim considered himself a skeptic of satellite radio until a customer made it clear: He wasn’t going to buy the $34,000 silver Jeep Grand Cherokee unless it had a $199 satellite receiver.

“Two months ago, I would have told you I didn’t really see it getting any traction,” says Barenboim, owner of Clark Chrysler Jeep in Methuen, Mass. The buyer left with a digital dashboard model from Sirius Satellite Radio instead of a traditional AM-FM tuner. “Today I think it might make it.”

Sirius and XM Satellite Radio Holdings are challenging traditional radio by attracting U.S. listeners with commercial-free music, scores of channels, uninterrupted reception and pre-installed car receivers. Their shares have outperformed those of Clear Channel Communications and Viacom, the two largest U.S. owners of land-based radio stations, which are trying to stem audience and advertising declines by changing formats and adopting digital signals.

Sirius Scores Four-Year Wimbledon Deal

Adding to its growing Sports lineup, Sirius Satellite Radio announced Wednesday it has signed a four-year agreement with the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club to air play-by-play and other courtside updates of the Wimbledon Championships. Did DIRECTV Try to Buy TiVo?

A little over a year ago, the DIRECTV-TiVo relationship seemed to be a perfect marriage.

The satellite TV provider was using the Digital Video Recording service to attract new subscribers, particularly among early adopters of new technology.

TiVo, which had struggled to persuade VCR owners to try the new technology, could count on DIRECTV to provide a steady stream of new customers.

Both sides were benefiting. However, today, the two companies appear headed for divorce. DIRECTV has announced that it will launch its own DVR service. Although the satcaster continues to market TiVo, many analysts question whether the relationship will continue when their current marketing agreement expires in 2007.
