XM vs Sirius satellite radio… Which one? (Signal vs. Noise)

Another option in the new car is either XM or Sirius satellite radio. Anyone have any opinions on which one to go with? Even though Sirius is a few extra bucks a month, I’m leaning towards Sirius because they have nationwide NPR and better sports coverage, but I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts. Is Sirius going to be around in a few years? They are only hovering around 350,000 subscribers while XM is is close to 2,000,000. Thoughts?

Cell Phones Ready To Enter Radio’s Space

For the past decade radio has been dealing with assaults from cable television, video games, the Internet, satellite radio, iPods and other sources of entertainment that has eroded the medium’s listenership. As technology improves and devices get smaller and more powerful, the next onslaught radio will face is from the ubiquitous cell phone and the race to impact the growing mobile music market.

Yesterday, Motorola introduced iRadio, a new service that will allow Internet radio to reach mobile phones. The iRadio technology fine-tunes existing media-ready mobile phones and allows them to record select Internet streams (XM, Sirius anyone?) when connected to a personal computer. Music from participating download services can also be transferred to iRadio ready phones. Once the phone leaves its PC dock, the contents can be listened to through headphones or through a car stereo system equipped with an iRadio Bluetooth adapter. Motorola also introduced a mobile phone that will store and play music, using Apple’s iTunes Music Player. iRadio trial versions will begin in a few months, with the fourth quarter of 2005 targeted for mass release.

Sirius getting no play from Apple iPod

Sirius Satellite Radio head Mel Karmazin yesterday dismissed rumors that the company is building a street-level studio for Howard Stern and said he approached Apple about adding Sirius to the iPod but the computer maker wasn’t interested.

Karmazin, who became Sirius chief executive in November, discussed the company in a wide-ranging 45-minute interview at the 2005 Media Summit in Manhattan. He raised the possibility of pairing satellite radio with Apple’s popular iPod digital music player, comparing that scenario with Sony’s decision in the 1980s to add a radio tuner to its Walkman.

BellSouth Reaches 200,000 DIRECTV Customer Milestone

BellSouth announced today that more than 200,000 customers have added DIRECTV(R) digital satellite television service to their BellSouth communications services packages since the company began offering the service in August 2004. During the fourth quarter of 2004, BellSouth added almost 109,000 subscribers to its DIRECTV offer.

My brother has been singing the praises of the DISH Network for years, but he recently moved to DirecTV. I still haven’t subscribed to satellite TV, but my days of holding out are likely numbered.

However, when Howard Stern mentioned he was moving to Sirius satellite radio, well, that clinched the deal for me. I purchased a Sirius radio for Christmas and have been enjoying it ever since! Even my wife wants one, now that she’s in my car and hears the 80’s station (commercial-free, I might add).

Do I like all of these monthly charges (piled on to my Tivo charges already!)? Heck no. But I also appreciate freedom of speech and have had enough of not being able to enjoy entertainment that’s so much more censored from even just a decade ago. (I know, because I’ve been listening to Stern for 15 years or more.)
